About this deal

If the fungus has only affected a very small section of an established Acer and the rest is unaffected, then you can try just pruning the damaged branches to the point that they are healthy. Maintenance wise acers are not very demanding. Keep them well watered in their first 6 -12 months but after that they’ll only need watering during hot and dry spells. The exception here is if you have planted your acer in a container. In that case water them regularly - once a day at least in very hot weather. Multi Stem tree: Two or more stems arising from or near ground level, growing from one root system. Make sure surface water run-off is not accumulating around the Acer, this can happen at the bottom of slopes or natural dips in the ground.

Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding qualitiesThe tree you receive from us will already be five to six feet tall. We’ll ship it to you in a 7.5 litre pot all ready for planting. They are very hardy trees but they will do best in a sheltered aspect. They don’t do well in very strong winds. For red and purple (variegated) varieties a position out of full sun will prevent their foliage from scorching. Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' - an upright shrub bearing 5-7 lobed leaves irregulary margined with creamy-white leaves that can sometimes be tinged pink. But, no matter how small your garden is, or how little space you have available, one plant you will be able to find space for is an acer tree. Hugely attractive, long lived, slow growing and with manageable heights these are the perfect trees for small gardens.

Use a container no more than double the size of the pot your tree is growing in. Any type of container is fine but it's essential it has good drainage. If necessary, drill a number of holes in the centre of the base. Holes can be drilled in most containers – for ceramic ones use a slow-speed drill and a masonry bit, making a small hole first and then enlarging it with larger bits. Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge. You can cover young or particularly delicate Acers in fleece or burlap if a spring frost is forecast when leaves have already started to form. If you were hoping to brighten up a bare area however, then there is good news as there are Acers that provide colour interest through the winter even when the leaves have fallen. Acer palmatum 'Kagiri-nishiki' - a strong but slow growing, variegated acer with beautiful bluish-green leaves which are margined in light pink tones and streaked with white. It has a dainty appearance and will make a lovely addition to any autumn garden as it adds interest in the cooler months.

This is such a sweet and beautiful tree. You will get so much enjoyment from this plant; A compact bush, amazing autumn colours - you name it! If you've always wanted a low-maintenance tree that's easy to grow and looks amazing in the summer AND also drips with red leaves in autumn then look no further. This tree has got it all.If you have an existing Acer in an exposed position, try to erect a windbreak or sunshade of some sort. The leaves are quite delicate and a harsh wind can easily damage the stems and leaf tissue as they get whipped about.

Japanese Acers require very little pruning, allowing your tree to grow naturally will be the best way to produce a graceful shaped specimen. You may however wish to prune badly positioned or crossing shoots to encourage a better form, in this case pruning is best done when the tree is fully dormant usually from November to February, pruning outside of this window may result in a weakened tree. Japanese Maples have a reputation for being hard to grow, but this is largely undeserved. Getting the location right is key but they are not susceptible to pests and diseases and with some basic care they will thrive. Acers with darker foliage colours (red to purple) can handle a bit more sun than the pale green and yellow varieties. Acer palmatum dissectum 'Orangeola' - a beautiful, mound-forming deciduous Acer has blazing orange red lace leaves throughout spring, turning bronze red in summer, then deep and fiery orange in autumn. Small, pendent clusters of tiny, reddish-purple flowers in spring are followed by red-flushed, green, winged fruit in summer. A beautiful Japanese Acer, eye catching and weeping - a stunning small architectural tree, ideal as a centre piece for your garden.Acer palmatum 'Sumi nagashi' - a large leaved, fast growing maple with serrated leaves and an upright growth habit. Vivid red leaf colour in spring, turning bronze-green in summer, followed by bright crimson in the autumn. Lovely deciduous tree with upright habit, and as a real bonus the crimson leaves in autumn/winter are outstanding. Any required pruning should be done between January and February during the dormancy phase to prevent sap bleeding from the cuts and weakening the tree. Always cut just above a pair of buds.
