We learn as children to swallow our tears and any other inconvenient emotions, and as adults that translates into working through red flags, value differences, pain, and exhaustion." However, children are not born with the knowledge of manners or appropriate human behavior. Fortunately, there is a solution – shaping (in psychology), which can aid us in molding our children’s conduct. We learn to bond through gossip, venting, and destroying rather than cultivating solutions together." Shaping is important because it is an effective method in behavior therapy. It can achieve long-lasting, desirable results if the application is consistent, even after the behavior plan has ceased. But these leaders don’t just have better ideas; they more often act on them, transforming the ways that they and their organizations operate. They find ways to transform their organizations’ business model and shape change, rather than simply responding to market changes. The difference these leaders make In movement work, I have been facilitating groups to shift from a culture of strategic planning to one of strategic intentions--what are our intentions, informed by our vision?" (70) I wanted to love this so badly, but I was painfully disappointed. This book is chaotic. Not in a good way, but in a braindump-without-structure-way. It makes reading the book a slow struggle and it gives such a horrible overview of what it's actually about. I believe you can finish this book and still not totally get what emergent strategy is. For decades, every year business leaders have followed a generally standardized approach to establishing an enterprise-wide strategy. It went something like this: determine revenue goals, look at the competition, conduct risk analyses, and then build strategies aligned to the mission of the organization. From these strategies, leaders set goals, specific action steps, and metrics, all of which they evaluated in a regular cadence. When an organisation hires a change management expert or team to help with their change initiative, certain models or tools may be used to guide the chance process.

Shaping provides support, guidance, and direction for both establishing a behavior and for a behavior change program.

Transitional change. Transitional change entails circumstances such as mergers and acquisitions. Essentially, an organisation is transitioning from its current state to a new state, usually with the intention of solving a problem. There are many challenges to change management, and organisations should be aware of them when embarking on any new change management initiative. For this reason, it allows for the assessment of its effectiveness for a child, and if it is initially proving to be unsuccessful, it can be modified to suit the child’s needs 4.

Are you interested in how you can support teams whose task and skill profiles are changing to become fit for the future? You have the right to create boundaries that generate more possibilities for you. Those boundaries may be short term or permanent." (141)

this is the kind of book that i will think about every day for the rest of my life. the book is clear that these ideas aren’t *new* but does provide a good framework. in adrienne maree browns's words: "Emergent strategy is how we intentionally change in ways that grow our capacity to embody the just and liberated worlds we long for" (3). Emergent Strategy" is a stream of consciousness manifesto harvested from blog posts, speech notes and interviews whose intersections flourish with new discoveries. The language is clear and precise hewing to the playful wonder of popular science writing with footnotes that meander between meticulous and hilarious in their emergence. Footnotes arising not so much to lend credibility or cleave strictly to source material, but augmenting the reader's journey into the author's imagination by nudging us on our own tangential exploration of sources, science and innovative developments in organizing communities. Compelling futures have to have more justice, yes; and right relationship to planet, yes; but also must allow for our growth and innovation. I want an interdependence of lots of kinds of people with lots of belief systems, and continued evolution." (57)The next stage is to establish steps to the desired behavior. Be recursive, as a step may often prove to be too large for a child to manage and may require being broken down into smaller, simpler, steps. One of the behavioral techniques used to shape children’s acceptable behavior is differential reinforcement of successive approximations. I feel a bounty of appreciation for adrienne maree brown. (What a charming person!) And there were little bits that are so useful (oh yes, I remember proposal-based meetings -- I should use that more).
